Portugal Golden Visa Residence

Portugal offers renewable residence through qualifying funds, cultural-heritage support or other remaining Golden Visa routes. CIPS reviews the route against family composition and the current stay and nationality rules before any funds are committed.

Program Type

Renewable residence

Minimum Investment Required

EUR 250,000

Minimum Stay Required

Low minimum stay under current rules

Family Inclusion

Spouse, qualifying children and, in some cases, dependent parents. Age, dependency and relationship rules are checked for each person.

Why consider Portugal

  • Renewable residence with a low minimum stay

  • The right to live, work and study in Portugal, plus visa-free travel in the Schengen Area

  • Permanent residence may follow later

  • Citizenship is a separate naturalization process and is no longer a five-year story for most nationalities

Qualifying routes

  • Cultural-heritage or artistic-production route from EUR 250,000, or EUR 200,000 in a low-density area

  • Qualifying investment fund from EUR 500,000

Additional government, due diligence, legal, property, transfer, tax and professional costs apply. The figure above is the published program floor, not the amount the client should budget. Review the structure before any funds are committed.

How an application proceeds

  1. Confidential consultation and preliminary suitability review

  2. Initial due diligence and review of family eligibility

  3. Selection and verification of the qualifying route

  4. Collection, certification and translation of supporting documents

  5. Submission through the appropriate authorized local channel

  6. Government review, due diligence and any request for further information

  7. Complete the qualifying investment, collect the first residence card, and meet the low stay requirement at each renewal.

What every applicant must be able to show

  • Valid identity and civil-status documents

  • A clean and fully disclosed personal background

  • Evidence supporting lawful source of funds and source of wealth

  • Completion of the qualifying contribution, investment, income or asset requirement

  • Medical, insurance, address, biometrics or other program-specific evidence where required

  • Ongoing compliance with holding periods, visits, renewals and reporting obligations

Practical notes

  • Real estate is not a qualifying option for new Golden Visa filings.

  • EUR 250,000 is the cultural-heritage floor. The common fund route is EUR 500,000.

  • The stay rule remains low: 14 days in the first two years and 21 days in the next three, under current rules.

  • Since 19 May 2026, naturalization generally takes ten years of legal residence, or seven for EU and CPLP nationals.

Questions

Is this an immediate passport?

No. This program gives a right to reside. Any later citizenship process is separate.

Who can be included?

Spouse, qualifying children and, in some cases, dependent parents may be included. Each person is assessed separately.

Is the published minimum the total cost?

No. Government fees, due diligence and professional costs sit on top.

Do I have to live there?

A low minimum stay applies under current rules. Full-time relocation is not required to keep the Golden Visa.

How does CIPS help?

We clarify objectives, compare routes, prepare the file for due diligence and coordinate with the qualified local professional who files the application.
